General Crafting

QSWFA has a wide range of crafters, and a wide range of crafts, and so has several regular meetings aimed at allowing all people to come and work on projects, have a cuppa, socialise, and learn from other members.

Members from all groups are welcome to attend Saturday General Meetings from 10am to 3:30pm on the first and third Saturdays of each month. Make yourself a cuppa tea or coffee, grab some bickies from the kitchen and settle in for the morning. These meets are a great opportunity to hear about our current news, presented by QSWFA’s President. Find out about events we are involved in and what’s on the horizon for QSWFA. Be inspired by Showcase, this is a presentation of members’ creations. Feel welcome to bring yours in and share its story, briefly describe the materials and method. Generally this part of the morning is wrapped up by 11.30am. After which you are free to mingle and meet members from the variety of our fibre art skills groups.

Our Library is available from around 11.30am for reading time and borrowing for the avid book worm and those in search of ideas and techniques, it is a great resource. The Emporium, fibre supplies and craft accessories shop & Equipment Hire will be opened also …..feel free to explore through wonderful natural fibres products and colours – some of which are hand dyed by our members- delightful experimental colours! …… time to go shopping!

The Fibre Craft House hall usually has stayers for continuing with their project or making use of the hall’s communal equipment. This is an opportunity to seek experience and advice from other members who always enjoy passing on their tips. Stay for a BYO lunch and enjoy the rest of the afternoon crafting with friends.

Most months a Guest Speaker will be invited to make a presentation with a talk as part of our first Saturday of the month meeting. The speaker and topic can be anyone who is of interest to the group and will sometimes include a demonstration or samples being passed around. Our speakers are people from outside the group or often our own members. We have a many artists and skilled crafts people with a wealth of knowledge of their craft amongst our membership who exhibit artworks, run their own workshops and / or online business.

Some past topics include: Book & Paper Arts, Nålbinding, International Scarf Exchange, Basket Weaving Artist visit to Thailand, Ravelry, Lace Making, Japan tour – Papermaking & workshops, Plant, seed, and vegetable dyeing for yarn, Tessellation Designs, Royal Flying Doctors (a charity we support), and Art Therapy.

Look for the announcement and introduction for the next Guest Speaker in our Clippings newsletter or on our events calendar.

Any member with suggestions for a guest speaker with a connection to arts, fibre, craft, paper, or person of interest are encouraged to email details to office@qldspinners.org.au, attention to Guest Speaker Co-ordinator.

QSWFA Guest Speaker meetings bring together a wider group of members as the speaker is of special interest to them and it motivates the sharing of ideas and skills. We invite members to bring along friends who are interested in the topic of a presentation as they may be intrigued and also temped to become a member themselves. Note: there is an entry fee for all meetings for Members and Visitors.

After the presentation our meeting will proceed with the announcements and showcase followed by Members able to make use of the Emporium shop, Equipment hire and Library. The Fibre Craft House hall usually has stayers continuing with their project or making use of the hall’s communal equipment. Stay for a BYO lunch and enjoy the rest of the afternoon crafting with friends.

The Midweek Craft Group meets on the second and fourth Wednesday of each month, and Tuesdays in other weeks. We all bring the craft we’re working on at the moment, and enjoy doing it in company, which we find stimulating and encouraging. In the photos you can see fibre preparation, spinning, knitting and crochet. Hand spindles are also popular, as are small, portable looms. We start at around 9.45a.m. and finish with our BYO lunch at around 12.30p.m.; sometimes we may be there a bit longer. The Emporium is available to members of QSWFA from 12 noon, for half an hour at the most; please ring beforehand, during the meeting hours, if you’re going to come in specially for the shop, as there isn’t always an authorised shop person available.

Every Wednesday night from 6.30 to 9 pm, the Night Owls flock to Fibrecraft House. Everyone brings their project to work on and to show off to the others. Whatever craft you’re working on – knitting, spinning, weaving, papercraft, felting, embroidery – join us! We’d love to have you along.

The Emporium opens at 8 pm for members of QSWFA to browse or buy craft supplies. There is also equipment in the hall available for use on site: hand carders, ball winders and our electric drum carder.

We don’t have formal classes or speakers on a Wednesday night, but there are accomplished crafters who are happy to answer a few questions about a wide range of crafts. We can answer some questions or help you brainstorm a solution to a difficult project.

There is a Thai restaurant on the corner and the Milton IGA down the road if you want to get dinner during your visit.
